India's Central Bank Raises Rates by 25 bps as Expected, Starts First Tightening Cycle Since Feb 2023
2026-10-07 13:23:44
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised its key interest rate by 25 bps to 5.5% on Wednesday (7th), in line with market expectations, marking the first tightening cycle since February 2023 as inflation continued to accelerate and exceed the central bank's target level.

Most economists surveyed also expect the central bank to raise rates again at its next meeting in December. The INR changed little, slipping by less than 0.1% to 96.4812 against the USD.
