HSI Loses 24,000 Mark, Slips 648 pts at Midday; HSBC HOLDINGS, AIA Slide ~5%; Casinos, Developers, AI Concept Stocks Wane

The three major US stock indices zigzagged to move higher on Thursday (1st). Yields on 10-year and 30-year US Treasury bonds ebbed after touching fresh highs of more than 24 years, while more Fed officials indicated that patience is needed before another rate hike. The US reportedly deployed a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East, sparking concerns over escalating conflict with Iran. Brent crude soared more than 4% overnight.

Hong Kong stock market was closed yesterday for the National Day holiday, while Mainland A-shares remained shut for the National Day Golden Week holiday. With Southbound Trading frozen, Hong Kong stocks got off to a weak start in October. The HSI reopened this morning (2nd) with a gap-down of 513 pts, at one point slumping 747 pts to a near three-month low of 23,865. The index closed the half-day at 23,964, down 648 pts or 2.64%, with main board turnover at HKD83.96 billion. The HSCEI closed at 8,026, down 193 pts or 2.35%, while the HSTECH closed at 4,149, down 104 pts or 2.45%.

Major tech names were depressed. BABA-W (09988.HK), TENCENT (00700.HK), MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) and JD-SW (09618.HK) sagged more than 2%. BIDU-W (09888.HK) dived 3.09% to HKD83.15, hitting a 52-week low. XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) closed the half-day at HKD24.1, down 4.52%, as Citi expected pressure on the stock price ahead of the company's 3Q26 results.

Financials and insurers weakened sharply. HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) once busted below the HKD150 level and closed the half-day down 4.87% at HKD150.3. AIA (01299.HK) subsided 5.64%. HKEX (00388.HK) and STANCHART (02888.HK) collapsed 5.65%. BOC HONG KONG (02388.HK), CHINA LIFE (02628.HK) and CCB (00939.HK) each faded more than 2%.

Macau's Sep GGR fell 1.2% YoY to MOP18.063 billion. CLSA said the result missed expectations by 3% and forecast Oct GGR to remain flat YoY. Macau gaming stocks came under pressure this morning. GALAXY ENT (00027.HK) tumbled nearly 6%, while SANDS CHINA LTD (01928.HK), WYNN MACAU (01128.HK) and MGM CHINA (02282.HK) eroded more than 4%. MELCO INT'L DEV (00200.HK) and SJM HOLDINGS (00880.HK) each plunged more than 5%.

Expectations for a Fed rate hike this month lowered, with CME data showing the probability of a hike dropping below 25%. However, local developers and landlords were still squeezed alongside the broader market. HENDERSON LAND (00012.HK) fell off 3.1% at half-day, while SHK PPT (00016.HK), SINO LAND (00083.HK), MTR CORPORATION (00066.HK) and HANG LUNG PPT (00101.HK) crumbled 2.2-2.9%. CK ASSET (01113.HK), SWIREPROPERTIES (01972.HK), WHARF REIC (01997.HK) and LINK REIT (00823.HK) dropped 1.7-1.9%.

AI concept stocks also deteriorated with the broader market. Z.AI (02513.HK) slipped 4.99%, MINIMAX-W (00100.HK) cratered 6%, and XUNCE (03317.HK) plummeted 2.64%.
