CEO Li Xiang: 'De-XX-ification' Is Zero-Sum Thinking; LI AUTO-W Will Not Define In-house R&D Strategy This Way
2026-09-28 15:38:07
Regarding claims that in-house R&D means pursuing "de-XX-ification" and creating opposition with suppliers, LI AUTO-W (02015.HK) CEO Li Xiang said the reality is exactly the opposite.

He cited examples including Apple Inc. (AAPL.US)'s A-series chips, flagship chips from NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) and QUALCOMM Incorporated (QCOM.US), most of which adopt a model combining in-house R&D with manufacturing by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSM.US). Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US)'s self-developed batteries are also produced in cooperation with CATL (03750.HK), LG and SUNWODA (300207.SZ). This model has not weakened Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd., CATL or SUNWODA. Instead, it has made them even stronger.

The automotive industry follows the same logic. Automakers define product experience, system architecture and quality standards more deeply, while partners leverage their expertise in engineering, manufacturing processes and large-scale delivery. A strong relationship between automakers and parts suppliers is not about one replacing the other, but about making products better through deeper collaboration. Vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers have never been engaged in a zero-sum game. In-house R&D is also not about becoming isolated, but about bringing the best partners closer together to jointly improve user experience.

In his opinion, pursuing "de-XX-ification" reflects zero-sum thinking. LI AUTO-W has never used such thinking to define its in-house R&D strategy, and he believes outstanding Chinese smart electric vehicle companies will not define their strategies with such a narrow mindset.
