HSI Drifts Lower by 72 pts for Day; XIAOMI-W Gains 1.5% After Product Launch Event; '3 Oils' Rise

Surprisingly strong latest US manufacturing PMI data pushed US Treasury yields sharply higher, with the probability of a US rate hike in October elevating to above 70%. Overnight (23rd), the three major US stock indices lost 0.68-1.13%, with major techs under pressure as the market kept eyes on developments surrounding the Xi-Trump meeting.

This morning (24th), the HSI opened down 184 pts before narrowing losses in the afternoon. The HSI closed at 24,761, down 72 pts or 0.29%, marking a second consecutive day of downswing, with main board turnover at HKD159.552 billion. The HSTECH closed at 4,361, down 17 pts or 0.41%. The HSCEI closed at 8,266, down 7 pts or 0.09%.

Among major dotcoms, XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) added 1.53% after its autumn new product launch event. BIDU-W (09888.HK) dived 2.54%. TENCENT (00700.HK), MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) and JD-SW (09618.HK) each lost by less than 1%. NTES (09999.HK) gained 1.25%, while BABA-W (09988.HK) added 0.18%.

International oil prices picked up overnight, with Brent crude futures climbing back above USD100. Hong Kong-listed "three oils" advanced, with PETROCHINA (00857.HK) up 2.83%, making it the best-performing blue chip of the day; CNOOC (00883.HK) up 2.14%; and SINOPEC CORP (00386.HK) up 0.9%.

Chip makers were squeezed. HUA HONG GRACE (01347.HK) crashed 3.33%, INNOSCIENCE (02577.HK) plunged 6.84%, GIGADEVICE (03986.HK) slipped 5.12%, and MONTAGE TECH (06809.HK) shrank 2.15%.

JPMorgan upheld a constructive view on China's AI value chain sector. Z.AI (02513.HK) sank 1.77%, while MINIMAX-W (00100.HK) gained 1.45%. SENSETIME-W (00020.HK), PHANCY (06682.HK) and XUNCE (03317.HK), which received initial Overweight ratings from JPMorgan, mounted 4.42%, 0.29% and 5.74%, respectively.

Rising US Treasury yields reinforced expectations for a Fed rate hike in October, exerting acute pressure on metals and resource stocks. CMOC (03993.HK) plunged 3.7%, making it the worst-performing blue chip of the day. ZIJIN MINING (02899.HK) cratered 2.56%, ZIJIN GOLD INTL (02259.HK) tumbled 3.34%, and CHINAHONGQIAO (01378.HK) plummeted 2.25%.
