HSI Finishes Up 310 Pts; BABA-W, POP MART Dive 2-3%; HENDERSON LAND Swells 7%

This morning (21st), the HSI opened up 109 pts and drifted higher throughout the session, closing at the day's peak of 26,009, up 310 pts or 1.21%, with full-day turnover reaching HKD257.277 billion. The HSTECH closed at 4,766, up 65 pts or 1.4%. The HSCEI closed at 8,634, up 86 pts or 1.01%.

Among heavyweight dotcoms, BABA-W (09988.HK)'s adjusted net profit for 1FQ missed. Although brokers upgraded the stock, its share price opened higher and then turned lower, closing down 2.54%. NTES (09999.HK) rallied 4.45% on strong gaming business in 2Q. XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) shot up 4.54%, while TENCENT (00700.HK) advanced 1.24%.

Several blue-chip companies released quarterly results. POP MART (09992.HK) slipped 3.06% post results, after JPMorgan downgraded the stock to Underweight. LI NING (02331.HK) opened higher before turning down 1.45%, as the company lowered its full-year revenue target to low-single-digit growth. HENDERSON LAND (00012.HK) posted more than 66% growth in interim underlying profit, beating expectations, and the stock closed up 7.17%. Citi and UBS said CHINA TELECOM (00728.HK)'s 2Q net profit beat, lifting the stock by 3.28%.

Resource and metal stocks thrived, with CHALCO (02600.HK) and CHINAHONGQIAO (01378.HK) both mounting more than 3%. Spot gold stabilized above USD4,500 per ounce, with ZIJIN GOLD INTL (02259.HK) surging another 8.09%, ZIJIN MINING (02899.HK) soaring nearly 5%, and LINGBAO GOLD (03330.HK) leaping 7.88%. Gold jewelry stocks also attracted buying interest, with CHOW TAI FOOK (01929.HK) up 1.12%, and LAOPU GOLD (06181.HK) up 7.46%, becoming the best-performing blue chip of the day.
