US Threatens to Impose 'Economic Isolation' on Iran; Oil Prices Elevate
2026-08-14 15:26:10
Oil prices elevated in early trading on Friday (14th) after the US said a maritime blockade on Iranian ports could continue indefinitely, reigniting concerns over energy flows through the key Strait of Hormuz.

As of 2:55 a.m. ET, Brent crude futures, the international oil benchmark, edged up 0.96% to USD87.91 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 1.08% to USD82.13.

Both benchmarks slid 2% during Thursday (13th) trading, but were still on track to post gains of about 4% for the week amid a continued rebound.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned in an interview with Newsmax that the US would adopt "economic isolation" measures targeting Iran, describing the measures as unprecedented, which lifted oil prices on Friday.
