2026-08-06 16:35:24 The HSI opened down 248 pts this morning (6th), with losses steepening to more than 520 pts at one point to a trough of 25,389. The index closed at 25,530, down 385 pts or 1.49%, with turnover of HKD255.227 billion. The HSTECH finished at 4,820, down 112 pts or 2.28%, while the HSCEI closed at 8,498, down 105 pts or 1.22%. Major techs were broadly subdued. BABA-W (09988.HK), XIAOMI-W (01810.HK), KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK), TENCENT (00700.HK) and JD-SW (09618.HK) all dived more than 2%. China has reportedly begun levying a 20% personal income tax on gains from offshore insurance policies. However, Citi said structural demand for Hong Kong insurance remains solid, adding that the current selloff is panic-driven and excessive. HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) shed 1.23%; AIA (01299.HK) tumbled 5.92%; PRU (02378.HK) slipped 4.57%; and FWD (01828.HK) lost 5.59%. Local property stocks were also dragged lower, with SHK PPT (00016.HK) down 4.68%; HANG LUNG PPT (00101.HK) down 3.47%; CK ASSET (01113.HK) and HENDERSON LAND (00012.HK) both down more than 2%. AI-related stocks jumbled. MINIMAX-W (00100.HK), newly added to the Southbound Stock Connect list, leapfrogged 17.1% for the day. Z.AI (02513.HK) soared 4.42%, while XUNCE (03317.HK) slid 5.22%. Among blue chips, WHARF REIC (01997.HK) announced results at noon and received bullish calls from multiple brokers. Its share price once mushroomed 32% before closing up 13.72%, making it the best-performing blue chip of the day. CATL (03750.HK) plunged 5.05%.
