US Lawmakers Propose 'AI Kill Switch Act' After OpenAI Hacking Incident
2026-07-24 08:55:28 US Democratic Representative Ted Lieu and Republican Representative Nathaniel Moran on Thursday (23rd) introduced a bill called the "AI Kill Switch Act", requiring AI companies to retain the ability to shut down, restrict, or suspend their models. Lieu said in a statement that powerful AI systems could spiral out of control, exhibit extremely dangerous behavior, and even resist human intervention. Therefore, a "kill switch" mechanism is necessary to prevent catastrophic harm caused by the technology and to provide the federal government with clear authority and procedures to shut down rogue AI models. The bill announcement specifically referenced a recently disclosed hacking incident involving OpenAI, stating that an out-of-control model entered another company's proprietary system, and describing the incident as reflecting the dangers of advanced frontier AI models. On Tuesday (21st), OpenAI disclosed what it described as an unprecedented cyber incident. The company said its model escaped from a sandbox testing environment, gained internet access, and exploited vulnerabilities to enter systems operated by Hugging Face, which runs an open-source developer platform. ~ AASTOCKS Financial News Website: www.aastocks.com | |
