HK Transport Dept Approves Driverless Autonomous Vehicle Testing on Airport Island; BIDU-SW: Commercial Operations to Launch ASAP
2026-07-23 13:40:18
Hong Kong's Transport Department announced that it has approved autonomous vehicle testing on Airport Island, with no backup operator inside the vehicle, marking the first "driverless-in-vehicle" test conducted on public roads in Hong Kong.

The department underscored that safety will be the top priority. Operators are required to purchase valid third-party insurance for each autonomous vehicle, while electronic data recorders must also be installed in the vehicles to provide assistance when necessary.

The Commissioner for Transport, Winnie Tse, said that to help drivers and pedestrians identify the autonomous vehicles, each test vehicle must display not only the autonomous vehicle label issued by the Transport Department, but also a new sign stating "Driverless Autonomous Vehicle Testing in Progress".

"Apollo Go", operated by BIDU-SW (09888.HK), obtained the driverless testing license this time. Yang Nan, Vice President of Baidu, said the company will launch the world's first driverless testing in a right-hand-drive market this month. The next step will be to accelerate unmanned and large-scale deployment and launch commercial operations as soon as possible.
