Xi Says CN-US Shared Interests Outweigh Differences, Hopes 2026 Will Be Historic Yr to Build on Past Achievements in Bilateral Ties
2026-05-14 10:37:56
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing this morning (14th), as Trump is paying a state visit to China.

Xi said that amid accelerating changes unseen in a century and intertwined global turbulence, the world has once again come to a new crossroads. Whether China and the US can avoid the "Thucydides Trap" and pioneer a new model of major-country relations; whether the two countries can work concertedly to address global challenges and inject greater stability into the world; and whether they can focus on the well-being of their peoples and the future of humanity to jointly create a better future for bilateral relations - these are questions of history, of the world and of the people, and are also the answers that leaders of major countries must jointly write in this era.

Xi accentuated that the shared interests between China and the US outweigh their differences. Each side's success represents an opportunity for the other, and stable China-US relations are conducive to the world. Both parties should be partners rather than rivals, achieve mutual success and shared prosperity, and find the right way for major countries to get along in the new era.

The Chinese President looks forward to exchanging views with Trump on major issues concerning both countries and the world, jointly steering the giant ship of China-US relations and setting the right course, making 2026 a historic and landmark year that builds on past achievements and opens a new chapter in bilateral ties.
