2026-05-05 12:28:15 US equities slumped overnight on news of clashes between the US and Iran in the Persian Gulf. The DJIA tumbled 557 pts, or 1.1%, while memory chip stocks continued to see buying interest. Hong Kong bourse opened lower in the morning session. The HSI opened down 150 pts and once slid 405 pts to a trough of 25,690 before closing at 25,793 at midday, down 302 pts or 1.2%. The HSCEI closed at 8,664, down 109 pts or 1.3%. The HSTECH closed at 4,885, down 90 pts or 1.8%. Half-day turnover totaled HKD64.544 billion. Among major stocks, TENCENT (00700.HK) and BABA-W (09988.HK) lost 1.1% and 0.8%, respectively, while MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) shed 2.1%. BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) and XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) each declined 3.2%. SMIC (00981.HK) slipped 2.2%. HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) announced its quarterly results at midday and closed the half-day at HKD141.4, down 1.4%, as OCBC agreed to acquire its Indonesia retail banking and wealth management businesses. HKEX (00388.HK) was flat at HKD414.8, while AIA (01299.HK) edged down 0.6%. CATL (03750.HK) leaped 2.6% against the market after Morgan Stanley raised its H-share TP to HKD815. CKH HOLDINGS (00001.HK) dipped 0.5% to HKD65 by midday.
