The Hong Kong bourse headed south in the morning session, with the HSI opening 298 points lower and then expanding its decline, slumping as much as 804 points to bottom at 24,963. By midday, it plunged 717 points or 2.8% to 25,051. The HSCEI cascaded 206 points or 2.4% to 8,401. The HSTECH dipped 95 points or 2% to 4,781. Financials steered the downswing, with HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) sagging 3.7% to HKD130.8; AIA (01299.HK) losing 5.5% to HKD80.35; and HKEX (00388.HK) and BOC HONG KONG (02388.HK) down 2.1% and 2.9%, respectively. Among Chinese insurers, CHINA LIFE (02628.HK) nosedived 6.7%, while CHINA TAIPING (00966.HK), PING AN (02318.HK), and CPIC (02601.HK) lowered 4.6-5.5%. Chinese banks such as CCB (00939.HK), ABC (01288.HK), ICBC (01398.HK), CM BANK (03968.HK), and BANK OF CHINA (03988.HK) each fell over 2%. Brokers, including GF SEC (01776.HK), CICC (03908.HK), CITIC SEC (06030.HK), and CGS (06881.HK), each tumbled over 4%. The three oils, SINOPEC CORP (00386.HK), PETROCHINA (00857.HK), and CNOOC (00883.HK), marked downfall of 3.9-4.4%, while oilfield services provider CHINA OILFIELD (02883.HK) stumbled 7.3%. Shippers COSCO SHIP HOLD (01919.HK) and COSCO SHIP ENGY (01138.HK) skydived 7% and 11.4%, respectively. PACIFIC BASIN (02343.HK) saw its annual net profit slip 56% with a final DPS of HK6 cents, and its stock price plummeted 8.7%. Gold retailer LAOPU GOLD (06181.HK) faded 5.6%. In the tech sector, TENCENT (00700.HK) and MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) dipped 1.6% and 1.9%, respectively, while KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) and BIDU-SW (09888.HK) sank 2.3% and 2.7%.
