David Webb Says HK Will Never Die, Hopes HK to Preserve Its Separate Existence
2025-06-02 09:07:06 Prestigious activist investor David Webb stated in an interview with the BBC that Hong Kong will never die and hopes that the city can retain its separate existence. He believed that both Mainland China and Hong Kong will eventually open up and become more democratically accountable places. He hopes this process will be peaceful and that the transition period will not be disastrous, confident that Hong Kong will have better opportunities to promote political reform in the future. Webb, who had served as an independent non-executive director of HKEX (00388.HK) in the 2000s, noted that he advocated against over-reliance on Chinese capital at that time. Twenty years later, he feels even more urgency, especially amid Sino-US tensions. He believes that HKEX and the Hong Kong government have not worked harder to attract companies from other countries in the region to list in Hong Kong, which is regrettable. There is still room for improvement in Hong Kong's listing rules, Webb said, advocating for the introduction of a class action system, allowing minority shareholders to hold directors accountable for abuse of power. Webb has been battling cancer for many years, and he went to Germany for treatment in January this year, but the treatment failed, making him aware that his days are numbered. Therefore, he announced in February that his life is entering the countdown phase and will orderly shut down his website. ~ AASTOCKS Financial News Website: www.aastocks.com |
