HSI Falters 221 pts at Midday; BABA-W, MEITUAN-W Dull; NIO-SW, XPENG-W Rise Against Mkt

The HSI concluded the midday down 221 points or 0.9% at 23,562. The HSCEI fell 62 points or 0.7% to 8,662. The HSTECH dropped 39 points or 0.7% to 5,845. The total market turnover for the half-day amounted to $177.025 billion.

TRACKER FUND (02800.HK) slipped nearly 1% to $23.84, on a turnover of $22.566 billion. Among tech stocks, TENCENT (00700.HK), BIDU-SW (09888.HK), and XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) inched down 0.9-1%. BABA-W (09988.HK) and BILIBILI-W (09626.HK) lost 2% and 2.4%. JD-SW (09618.HK) and MEITUAN-W (03690.HK) slid 3.1% and 3.2%. In contrast, KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK) rose 1.4% to $64.

Additionally, WEIMOB INC (02013.HK), NEW ORIENTAL-S (09901.HK), and MEITU (01357.HK) waned 2.8-3.5%. Q TECH (01478.HK), FIT HON TENG (06088.HK), AAC TECH (02018.HK), and COWELL (01415.HK) ebbed 2.9-3.6%. Chip equipment stock ASMPT (00522.HK) surprised the market with a decline in its quarterly gross profit, sinking its stock price by 3.6%.

Car makers NIO-SW (09866.HK) and XPENG-W (09868.HK) were hyped up 8.7% and 6.2%. NIO-SW is set to deliver the ET9 this month. LEAPMOTOR (09863.HK) narrowed its annual loss to RMB2.821 billion with a record-breaking GPM for 4Q24, pushing its stock price up 4.9%.

International banks followed the global downturn. HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK) eroded 2.6%, while STANCHART (02888.HK) plunged 5.5%. As for other financial stocks, HKEX (00388.HK) dipped 1.6%, while AIA (01299.HK) inched up 0.5%. Chinese insurers PING AN (02318.HK), ZA ONLINE (06060.HK), and CPIC (02601.HK) plummeted over 2%. Chinese developers R&F PROPERTIES (02777.HK), CIFI HOLD GP (00884.HK), and AGILE GROUP (03383.HK) slumped 3.1-4.6%.
